Different theories and legends have long suggested that the unicorn myth may actually have its genesis by way of the humble rhinoceros. This is another piece done for my licensing portfolio, and any excuse to create art based on one of my all-time favorite animals is a good one :)
The following images will help shed some light on to my process...
1 - It all starts with a humiliating little sketch meant to capture the essence of what I have in mind.
2- Hopefully, my array of high tech and super expensive lighting rigs won’t intimidate anyone from playing around with their camera. Actually, those tiny finger lights are quite bright, and can be put to good creative use when you get back from a rave.
3 - I dug up a clump of grass on the day before we got our first snow, and placed it in a baking pan with dirty water (for a better reflection), and viola…a mini-swamp!
4 - Like a lot of illustrators, I collect a ton of figurines and models that a) look really cool on the shelf, and b) justify their expense and existence as models for lighting and visualizing a scene. This is a great supplement to all my general research, and goes a long way towards the ultimate success of a piece.
5 - A closer look, and it's entirely done in Photoshop
